Give me Dragons

Let me start with – I liked Fourth Wing. I enjoyed it for what it was, a fun, cute, dip your toe into the fantasy genre.

I really liked the dragons, but I’ve also realized that I’m a sucker for dragons which is probably why Eragon remains one of my favorite fantasy series to date! But, for what it is worth, I enjoyed Fourth Wing and gave it five stars. I was looking forward to Iron Flame.

Bring on the Sequel

On to Iron Flame. I just didn’t like it. I know, many people loved it. I actually had a hard time finding things I liked about this book and I won’t sit here in bash on it, but I will highlight some of the things that fell flat for me.

The Dragons – One of the most endearing parts of Fourth Wing was the dragons; this time, they just didn’t have much personality. I was so disappointed in how they were portrayed.

The Characters – On the same note, the characters didn’t evolve from book one. I think I liked Sloane and Aaric more than any of the other characters, or at least I wanted to learn more about them.

Too Many Things – I think the author tried to do too many things in this book. Some of the events really could have held their own for more of the book and brought more depth, more character, and more tension to the overall storyline. Instead I feel like we were rushed from event to event.

Overall

Iron Flame fell into the book two black hole that many book twos seem to fall into. I ended up giving this book two stars. I originally gave it three stars, but compared to other three star books, it just doesn’t hold its own, so I had to drop it to two stars.
